What is Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. These nerves are responsible for transmitting signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body.

Neuropathy can affect sensory, motor, or autonomic nerves, leading to a variety of symptoms depending on the nerves involved.

  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of coordination and balance

Causes of Neuropathy

  • Diabetes (most common cause)
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Infections
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Trauma or nerve injury
  • Alcohol abuse

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis helps identify the underlying cause and guide treatment.

  • Detailed clinical evaluation
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCV/EMG)
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging studies if required

Treatment

Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and addressing the underlying cause.

  • Medications for nerve pain relief
  • Treatment of underlying conditions (e.g., diabetes control)
  • Vitamin supplementation if required
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation

Prevention

  • Maintain good blood sugar control
  • Follow a balanced diet
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Regular health check-ups
